According to WiseGeek<\/em>, Mesostics <\/a>are poems \u2018in which a vertical column of letters spells a word and the horizontal lines intersect with those letters to form a complete poem.\u2019<\/p>\n

Further: \u2018This is a different type of poem than an acrostic, in which the beginning letters of each line can be put together to spell a message or word. In most cases, the vertical key word is meaningful to the rest of the poem rather than an attempt to hide a message within the text.\u2019<\/p>\n

They cite John Cage, who was also famous as a minimalist composer-musician, as a great writer of mesostic poetry.

<\/h2>\n

What\u2019s the Design Connection?<\/h2>\n

Well, award-winning designer Roger Horberry is not just a fan of the technique but makes effective use of them to design and promote all sorts of things.<\/p>\n

Recent recipient of 2014 Design Week<\/em> award – \u2018Writing for Design\u2019 – 2014 winner Cross Words, Roger Horberry <\/a>collaborated with The Workshop.<\/a><\/p>\n

The category <\/a> covered writing for brand campaigns, identity programmes, packaging, digital projects adopted during the calendar year 2013.<\/p>\n

His design was a clever arrangement of a key horizontally written statement (Ideas spontaneously materialising at precisely the right juncture? Alas, The Muse isn\u2019t quite so dependable) so that the right letters vertically spell a keyword – INSPIRATION.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, one of my favourite pieces by Roger is a poster for Waterstones\u2019 that reads: Words cannot do justice to the pleasures of a good bookshop. Ironically.\u2019 It\u2019s clever, apt, concise and works.<\/p>\n

Word Clouds<\/h2>\n

Roger also uses the occasional variant of word clouds to achieve his telling art and copywork.<\/a> Not to be confused with The Cloud for storage and disseminating in formation, the word cloud is an agreeable, often quirky arrangement of keywords or short phrases which tell a tale, sell a message too.<\/p>\n

Often they can be tag clouds, too, but the essential point is that the words are designed and presented in such a way that they are interesting, appealing and communicate fully.<\/em><\/p>\n

You can buy a programme to do it; some sites do it for you. Just type or paste in a bunch of text, click \u2018generate\u2019 and low and behold you get a word cloud. One such open ended and text analysis tool is WordyUP<\/a>. They say it is of use for professional researchers, insights pros and marketers.<\/p>\n

Wordle<\/a> calls itself \u2018a toy for generating word clouds from supplied text\u2019. They allow users to generate clouds and use them for any purpose. If they are in the gallery, then anybody else can use them too. they also explain how to set up your own technically and how to overcome technical problems.<\/p>\n

One example is Duty of Care<\/p>\n\"Wordle:\n

and another is Godfreys Class<\/p>\n\"Wordle:\n

Tag Crowd<\/a> is a similar set up with free provision to create and use your own tag cloud.<\/p>\n

Copywriting Descriptions<\/h2>\n

One of Roger\u2019s blogs identifies himself with Dessol customers ABC Copywriting<\/a>\u00a0 poster used at the head of this blog and which sums it up when it comes to descriptive words.<\/p>\n
